When you attend one of the CPBOA new official class you and other first and second year officials will have a mentor to help you every step of the way. You will also have access to the faculty of the new official school who will arrange scrimmages and classroom sessions to help you get comfortable in your new role as a PIAA official.\rYour first year you will join the CPBOA and it is recommended that you also join IAABO (www.iaabo.org). These two organizations will help you get as far as you want to go in your officiating career.\rHere are some things you can expect your first year. Attend at least six CPBOA chapter meetings. Meetings are designed to help officials stay current on rules and interpretation and to provide a forum for discussion about recent game situations. Provide your availability to the Non-PIAA assignor. This will help begin the process of getting game assignments. Purchase officiating equipment. The PIAA recommended equipment provider is www.purchaseofficials.com. Connect with your assigned mentor and follow them for a night during one of their PIAA assignments. Also, when you get assignments make sure your mentor has your schedule so they can come see you officiate and offer assistance as needed. Work your first games. Reconnect with your mentor to get insight or ask questions. Keep reading the rules book and case study book. The more you know the rules the better your games will be.

Register and attend an IAABO basketball official school over the summer. This is the best way to improve your game management and officiating skills. Clinicians from the NCAA and top ranked high school officials from all over will help you be the best official you can be and will offer insight on how you can improve. Also, make sure your availability is current so that you will get assigned summer recreation, high school summer league and AAU tournaments.

At times there are over 110 game assignments a night in season. You will be able to work as many games as you would like that are assigned to you. Make sure you keep your Non-PIAA and PIAA

Some CPBOA officials have worked PIAA state finals games at the Bryce Jordan Center and the Giant Center. Other CPBOA officials have worked in NCAA DI tournaments and others have worked in NCAA DII or DIII tournaments. How high do you want to go? How hard will you work?

'Many officials get involved with officiating to support local recreation leagues. These officials play a valuable role in the education and fitness of our youth and they work each game as if the game is the most important game to the players involved. For many players these games will be the highest level of competition they will have in basketball and officials who work these games have the same attitude and professionalism as those who work the in the NCAA.

The secret to officiating is to treat each game as if it were at the Giant Center or the Bryce Jordan Center. If you do that and work on your craft who knows how high or how fast you can go in officiating

You will be assigned a mentor who will help you every step of the way. Make sure you communicate with your mentor after your games to share your experience and ask questions.

Work games, focus on one or two areas to improve, attend meetings and attend an IAABO school in the summer. Talk with other officials and go to as many games as possible and watch how other officials manage a game.

Yes! Many officials attend games to watch and observe other officials working. It’s a great way to learn and improve. Every game is different and watching officials work is the best way to gain an understanding of the complexities of the game and proper game management.

Your mentor will invite you to attend some of their games. Also, if you would like to follow an official for pre-game, ½ time and post game discussion that can be arranged through your contact with the CPBOA. Simply fill out the information in the contact section and someone will contact you.
